Watch two candidates go through the same hiring process and you will learn more about them than any CV could tell you. One is decisive. They know exactly what they want and how to get there, so every step is clean and quick. The other flaps. They hesitate, defer, and circle back, because underneath it they are not really sure what they want at all. The process did not create that difference. It simply made it visible.

That is what a hiring process actually tests. Not your experience on paper, but whether you have clarity of purpose and the nerve to act on it. For enterprise software, SaaS, and AI companies hiring GTM talent, that signal matters enormously, because it is the same clarity the role itself will demand every single day.

Two candidates, two very different signals

We see it across the market all the time. Recently one candidate moved the moment the offer landed. Not out of desperation. They knew what they wanted and had already decided the role was right, so there was nothing left to deliberate. From the outside, clarity looks like speed.

Another candidate, just as capable on paper, flapped. Days between replies. Meetings pushed. Decisions deferred while they waited to feel certain, when the real problem was they had never decided what they wanted in the first place. That indecision is rarely just nerves. It runs deeper. It is a tell about how someone thinks, chooses, and holds up under even mild pressure.

Neither candidate had to describe their character. The process described it for them. If you are genuinely clear on your goal and how to get there, flapping has no place. When it shows up anyway, it says the clarity was never really there.

In GTM, the process is a live audition

This cuts sharper still across go-to-market. Sales, Presales, Customer Success, Marketing, RevOps, GTM leadership: the hiring process is not a break from the job. It is a live demonstration of it. Every GTM role runs on the same fundamentals. Preparation. Clear communication. Follow-through. Momentum. The process tests all of them before you have signed a thing.

Turn up unprepared and you have shown how you will turn up to a customer, a campaign, or a board. Let the process go cold and you have shown what your follow-through looks like once the pressure is real. Miss the close on next steps and you have answered the question every hiring team is actually asking: does this person make things happen, or wait for them to happen? Your candidacy is your first project. Treat it like one.

Run your job search like a sales cycle

The strongest candidates we place do not wing it. They bring the same rigour to their own search that they would to their most important piece of work. That looks like:

  • Discovery and preparation.Research the company, the product, the market, and the person across the table. Walk in with sharp questions, not generic ones.
  • An agenda sent ahead. A short note before the meeting, setting out what you would like to cover, signals control and respect for everyone’s time. Almost nobody does this. It stands out instantly.
  • A two-way qualification. Good salespeople qualify. Use the conversation to test fit honestly, in both directions. It builds trust and sharpens your own decision.
  • A clear close on outcomes. Never end a conversation without agreeing what happens next and by when. Closing on next steps is not pushy. It is professional.
  • A follow-up that lands the same day. A crisp recap email confirming what was discussed and what comes next keeps the momentum and puts your discipline on the record.
  • Momentum, protected. Time kills all deals, and it kills candidacies too. Speed here is not desperation. It is the natural by-product of knowing your own mind.

Decisive is not reckless, and clear is not rigid

None of this means grabbing the first offer or forcing a call you have not thought through. The candidate who moved quickly was not chasing. They were clear, and clarity is decisive by nature. The one who flapped was not being careful. They were avoiding the discomfort of deciding what they wanted. Do that harder thinking before the process starts, get honest about your goal and the path to it, and the decisiveness takes care of itself. There is simply nothing left to agonise over.

Why this is how we work

As a global GTM search partner, we coach the candidates we represent to approach the process this way, because it reflects the same standard our clients hire for. When a shortlist arrives from us, the hiring company is not just meeting qualified people. They are meeting people who have already shown, in the way they run the process, exactly how they think and decide. That is why our placements stick and why clients keep coming back.

Your next role will not be won by your CV alone. It will be won, or lost, in whether you truly know what you want and show it in every decision you make along the way. Get clear first. The rest follows.
